Arctic Small States in Great Power Competition: Then and Now

06.12.2018

Department of Social Science at Ilisimatusarfik invites to a public lecture - titled: "Arctic Small States in Great Power Competition: Then and Now" with Rebecca Pincus, US Naval War College, USA.

The Arctic region, and its small states, have played an important and dynamic geopolitical role in earlier eras of great power competition. The literature on small states, and in particular on islands, offers theoretical insights on the relationships between larger and smaller powers. Many modern case studies of these relationships are drawn from the period of US-USSR dyadic rivalry. As we enter a new age of great power competition, which appears to be multipolar in character, what useful lessons may be drawn from the past? How might the changing physical environment of the Arctic itself affect great power dynamics?

Rebecca Pincus is Assistant Professor in the Strategic and Operational Research Department (SORD) in the Center for Naval Warfare Studies at the US Naval War College, and a member of the Institute for Future Warfare Studies within SORD. She previously served as primary investigator (PI) at the US Coast Guard's Center for Arctic Study and Policy, located at the US Coast Guard Academy.

  • When: 06 December 2018, at 16.00 - 18.00
  • Where: auditorium at Ilisimatusarfik

The open lecture is open for everyone - and coffee / tea and cakes will be served
